Post Fence School

And that’s a wrap for KIWI Fence School Fall 2016!

Going into Fence School, my fence-construction knowledge was minimal. Actually, my fence knowledge period was minimal. However, I can confidently say I can build a fence, and I can build it the correct way…the first time…well, maybe the second or third time!

I had high expectations of Fence School, and it’s safe to say those expectations were exceeded. I wasn’t quite sure how much time would be spent in the classroom or how the instructors would balance the need for basic knowledge of fence construction with the participants’ obvious desire to get out in the field and construct the fences.

The structure of the school was very balanced and well thought out. It was refreshing to start off the mornings inside learning the basics of fence construction, materials, and basic systems such as bracing and energizers. Getting out into the field, however, was hands-down the best part of Fence School. Being an employee, I tried to take a step back and allow the customers to get in and get their hands dirty. The instructors did a great job of encouraging not only myself, but other Kencove employees to get in and use the tools and hardware as well. There was more than enough crimping, cutting, and pounding of staples for everyone to get a few swings in! And that is one of the greatest aspects of Fence School.

By limiting the number of students, the instructors are better able to answer questions, allow for more hands-on approaches, and provide an overall experience that is not only beneficial to the students but to the instructors as well. Since there were only 10 students in attendance, each and every participant had the chance for one-on-one instruction with tool usage, safety, identification of parts, and key product tips and tricks. It was also a great experience hearing from seasoned fence contractors who were participants in the school. Getting real-life examples of our fence’s usage through the eyes of contractors and customers alike allowed for a more comprehensive understanding of our products and gave key insight for the product specialists enrolled in the school.

The material covered in the two days was more information than most would learn in a year. Although we didn’t cover every single sheet of paper in our binders, the instructors highlighted the basics of each section, gave examples, and answered questions from the participants. I felt it was very beneficial to have such a large, organized, take-home binder to keep as a reference. I know for a fact I’ll be referencing that bright-blue binder daily! The course outline is well thought out and works well. I was impressed with the instructors’ knowledge, experiences, and their ability to take real-life examples and turn them into teachable moments. I was impressed with their teaching skills and ability to keep the students engaged and the learning environment friendly and exciting.

There is room for improvement, as there is with everything. I believe a slideshow of all Kencove products with the codes and descriptions would help participants identify products easier. I also think the break structure gave us a little too much downtime and made for awkward transitions between the classroom and the field.

I found it extremely beneficial to attend Fence School. Not only am I better equipped to help customers, I am far more knowledgeable in our products and their applications and can turn these new experiences into blogs, social media posts, and customer service. I have gained a more comprehensive understanding of fence construction techniques, tips, and tricks and now have a better overview of fence installation. Fence School was not only beneficial from an employee standpoint, but also gave me insight into what being a fence contractor entails and gave me a newfound skill of fence installation!

I would highly recommend anyone who ever considered installing fence to enroll in our next Fence School. I would also recommend any new fence contractors, or individuals interested in fence installation to enroll as well. Not only does Fence School provide you with reference material, hands-on learning, and product identification, it also offers you new connections with product specialists, fellow fence contractors, and potential customers, and it gives you the confidence to install multiple types of fence correctly.

Make sure to check out our Facebook page for photos and videos from the school! And keep your eye out for KIWI Fence School Spring 2017! We hope to see you there!
