When it comes to rotational grazing, flexibility isn’t just helpful—it’s essential. Mother Nature doesn’t follow a strict calendar, so grazing systems shouldn’t either. Management-intensive Grazing (MiG) thrives on adaptability. That means adjusting the size of paddocks, the timing of moves, and the recovery period—all based on pasture conditions and herd needs. At the heart of this approach is the flexible grazing cell.
Back in 1983, we began developing our grazing system on a 260-acre farm in Missouri. Initially, we built over 70 small paddocks using permanent high-tensile fencing. While it gave us structure, it also locked us into a rigid system. Over time, we realized that too much permanent fencing limited our ability to respond to changing forage and weather conditions.
We began shifting toward temporary electric fencing for our subdivisions. It allowed us to change paddock size and shape based on growth, rainfall, and stocking rates. With fewer fixed divisions and more temporary setups, we could make better use of every acre. That change transformed how we managed both our animals and our land.
On our current 16-acre property in Idaho, we rely almost entirely on temporary fencing. The only permanent structures are the perimeter fences. Our setup uses “grazing corridors”—narrow strips that run from the stream at the bottom of the property to the top.
Each corridor is divided using temporary reels and posts. We move the cattle up the corridor in 3-day increments, then shift them into the next corridor. This method is simple, quick, and leaves no fence behind to obstruct wildlife. Because our only water source is a small stream, this layout ensures efficient grazing while maintaining access to water.

A mile and a half away, we manage over 1,000 acres that includes irrigated pivots, flood-irrigated land, and desert rangeland. Here, we typically run 350–550 cow-calf pairs. You’d expect a setup of this size to require miles of permanent fencing—but it doesn’t.
We’ve divided the land into just 10 permanent pastures and use temporary fencing to manage daily rotations. On our 300-acre center pivot, there are only two permanent 2-wire high-tensile fences: one on the outer boundary and one midway between the pivot center and the outer edge. We’ve installed six permanent water tanks spaced along the inner circle. Strip grazing occurs in zones around these tanks, with 3–4 days of grazing before moving to the next zone.
Despite the scale, the principles are the same: lay out broad corridors, then fine-tune movement with temporary fencing. Even though we're managing hundreds of animals, my daily fencing routine takes less than 30 minutes thanks to reliable tools and a well-designed plan.
A flexible grazing system lets you respond to real-time conditions instead of sticking to a rigid calendar. By adjusting grazing and recovery periods based on forage availability, you can keep pastures healthy and productive throughout the season. Temporary fencing also makes it easier to rotate animals efficiently without disturbing wildlife or damaging fields.
This approach improves soil structure, encourages uniform grazing, reduces weed pressure, and often leads to better animal weight gains. Whether you’re managing 16 acres or 1,000, flexibility gives you more control — and better results — with less infrastructure.
