Improving Poor Grounding in Electric Fence Systems

A common reason electric fences underperform—especially in dry climates—is poor grounding. In order for the fence to deliver a proper shock, electricity must complete a circuit: it travels from the energizer, through the fence wire, into the animal, through the ground, and back to the energizer via the ground rods. But when the soil is dry, rocky, or sandy, the earth becomes a poor conductor, and the return voltage drops significantly. As a result, the fence may seem weak or inconsistent.
In regions with limited rainfall or where the soil doesn’t hold moisture well, additional grounding solutions are often necessary to maintain effective fence performance.

Why Dry Ground Is a Problem

Moist soil is an excellent conductor, which is why fences tend to perform better after a rain. On the other hand, dry, barren ground creates high resistance, which interrupts the return flow of electricity. This resistance causes a voltage drop, weakening the shock animals feel when they contact the fence. In some cases, the fence may not work at all, especially if grounding is minimal or improperly installed.

To overcome this, you can supplement or redesign your grounding system to improve voltage return and keep your fence working consistently—even in difficult soil conditions.

There are two effective ways to improve grounding in dry areas:

1. Grounding a Strand of Fence

One of the simplest ways to enhance grounding is by grounding one of the fence wires. In this system, some wires on the fence act as “hot” (energized) while at least one strand is connected to the grounding system. When an animal touches both a hot wire and the grounded wire simultaneously, it completes the circuit—delivering a full shock without relying on the earth’s conductivity.

This setup essentially bypasses the soil altogether, reducing reliance on poor ground conditions. It’s particularly helpful in dry, sandy, or frozen environments where the soil alone cannot return current effectively.

This method works best with animals that tend to touch multiple strands at once—such as cattle, deer, or horses. The key is to ensure that the grounded strand is properly tied into the energizer’s ground terminal and spaced so that contact with both wires is likely.

2. Running a Buried Ground Wire Along the Fence

A more comprehensive solution involves installing a bare galvanized wire along the fence line—just below the surface. This wire connects back to the main ground system and is tied to each T-post (or other fence post) along the fence. This setup extends the reach of the grounding system, making it easier for voltage to return, even in poor soil conditions.

Because the return path is much closer and doesn’t rely entirely on the earth, this method drastically reduces resistance and improves fence consistency.

The wire should ideally be buried about 4–6 inches underground to protect it from weather and animal traffic. It can also be run along the surface and kept taut, though this approach carries some risk—especially for horses. A loose or exposed ground wire can catch on hooves or get tangled, potentially causing injury if it hooks on a shoe or around the pastern joint.

TIP: When installing additional ground rods for any system, they should also be buried 4–6 inches under the surface for optimal contact and to reduce the risk of interference or accidental exposure.

  • Check for existing utilities: Before burying ground wire, make sure you aren’t near water lines, electrical cables, or other buried services.
